Every March, our social media feeds are filled with purple banners and inspiring quotes celebrating women. International Women’s Day is a wonderful moment to pause and recognise the amazing achievements of women everywhere. However, once the day passes and the hashtags stop trending, the real work actually begins. Supporting the women in our lives and our communities is not just a twenty-four-hour event; it is a year-round commitment to making the world a fairer place for everyone. To help you keep that momentum going, here are practical things you can do to support women every single day.
Support female-owned businesses intentionally:

One of the most direct ways to make a difference is with your wallet. Make a conscious effort to seek out and buy from businesses owned by women in your local area or online. Whether it is your morning coffee, a new book, or professional services, choosing a female entrepreneur helps close the economic gap. When these businesses thrive, they create more jobs and opportunities for other women, building a stronger community for everyone involved.
Mentor or sponsor a woman at work:

If you are in a position of experience or influence, use it to open doors for others. This could mean offering formal mentorship to a junior colleague or simply speaking up for a talented woman during a meeting when she is not in the room. Sharing your knowledge and network can significantly speed up someone else’s career path. By being a vocal advocate, you help ensure that capable women get the recognition and the promotions they truly deserve.

Equality often starts in the kitchen or the laundry room. Take a look at the unpaid work happening in your household and ensure it is shared fairly. This includes the “mental load,” such as planning meals or remembering school dates. When domestic responsibilities are balanced, women have more time and energy to pursue their own interests, careers, and self-care. It creates a home environment built on mutual respect and partnership.
Amplify women’s voices in conversations:

In group settings, women are often interrupted or have their ideas overlooked. You can help by actively listening and ensuring they have the floor to finish their thoughts. If you notice a woman’s point being ignored, you can bring the focus back to her by saying, “I really liked what she was saying earlier.” This simple act of amplification ensures that valuable perspectives are heard and respected by the whole group.
Educate yourself on gender issues:

Take the time to read books, watch documentaries, or listen to podcasts that explore the challenges women face globally. Understanding the history of women’s rights and the current barriers to equality helps you become a more effective ally. When you are well-informed, you can engage in more meaningful conversations and challenge biased comments when you hear them. Knowledge is the foundation of any real social progress.
Encourage young girls to lead:

Start with the next generation by encouraging the girls in your life to be confident and take on leadership roles. Whether it is in sports, school projects, or hobbies, show them that their voices and skills are valuable. Avoid using limiting language and instead praise their bravery, intelligence, and problem-solving abilities. Helping a young girl believe in her own potential is a powerful investment in a more equal future for everyone.
International Women’s Day is the spark, but your daily actions are the fuel that keeps the fire of progress burning. When we move beyond the celebration and start making these small changes, we help build a world where every woman has the chance to succeed.
