There is more to sports than just hitting a ball, swimming or being the fastest man on earth. There are many seemingly unusual sports around the world that you might not have heard about or discovered.
Well, let Ibiene take you on a journey to the weird and unusual world of sports. You probably would not believe, but people actually participate in them.
- Cheese Rolling:
Here’s how it works. A large cheese wheel is rolled down a steep hill, and competitors race after it. The first person to reach the bottom of the hill wins the cheese. This may not sound dangerous, but the steepness of the hill has resulted in several injuries. People take part in this sports in some parts of the UK.
2. Wife Carrying:
While some men complain about getting their wives off their backs, others enjoy having them on and running. Originating in Sonkajarvi, Finland, wife carrying is a sport in which male competitors race with their wives across their back and running through obstacle course. Lolz! You must be fit to do this.
3. Chess Boxing:
Chess boxing is a battle that consists of 11 rounds in which competitors alternate between playing traditional chess and boxing. Seriously? This is weird.
4. Extreme Ironing:
Call it extreme sport or performance art? You might be correct. In this sport, competitors who call themselves “ironists” go to a remote location and iron their clothes. The domestic chore has been performed hanging from cliffs, while skiing or snowboarding, underwater, and even on top of vehicles. Absolutely weird!
5. World Gurning Contest:
In this competition, the ugliest face wins. Gurning is a word for ‘pulling a face’, and people have decided to make it a contest.
6. Underwater Hockey:
Are you used to field hockey and ice hockey. Well there’s on more underwater hockey also known as “ Octopush”. This sport involves two teams trying to push a puck using a stick across the floor of a swimming pool into the opposing team’s goal.
7. Toe Wrestling:
Toe wrestling involves competitors going toe-to-toe. The unusual sport dates back to 1976 and the rules are simple. With socks and shoes off, two competitors interlock their toes and try to “pin” down their opponent’s foot while their other feet hang in the air. Lolz! Really unusual.
8. Oil wrestling:
Oil wrestling is a Turkish national sport held around the world in June every year. The contest, known as pehlivan has men covered in olive oil trying to wrestle the other to the ground. This style of wrestling has also become popular in other countries, particularly the Netherlands and Japan.
