International Day of Potato?….

May 30th isn’t just another day on the calendar – it’s International Day of Potato! This quirky holiday honours everyone’s favourite underground friend: the potato.

The International Day of Potato will be celebrated for the first time on May 30th, 2024 to recognize the many values of potato, including its role in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. This is a collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the government of Peru, the World Potato Congress, and many other countries and potato associations.

But why celebrate this starchy staple? Well, potatoes are like the ultimate all-rounder. They’re affordable, filling, and packed with nutrients. Mashed, roasted, fried, or baked – they’re delicious in countless ways! Plus, they’re a global superstar, feeding over a billion people worldwide.

The day’s celebration includes:

  • Recognizing the potato’s nutritional and livelihood benefits.
  • Celebrating the cultural and culinary aspects of potato cultivation and consumption.
  • Acknowledging the role of small-scale farmers in preserving thousands of native potato varieties.
  • Underscoring the importance of potatoes in fighting hunger and poverty, and in addressing environmental threats to agrifood systems.

So, how can you join the potato party? It’s easy!

Whip up your favourite potato dish – think creamy potato salad or crispy French fries. Share a fun potato fact with friends (did you know there are over 4,000 potato varieties?). Or, post a picture of your potato creation using #InternationalPotatoDay.

International Day of Potato is a light-hearted way to appreciate this amazing food. So next May 30th, grab a spud, get creative, and celebrate the mighty and tasty potato!

So, why not make some tasty potato dish on this day, and share with family and friends.
